MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM: Explore the wonders of our ocean planet in nearly 200 galleries and exhibits at the world renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium. Highlights include a two-story exhibit of playful sea otters, a towering three-story kelp forest, a million-gallon Open Sea exhibit with sea turtles, hammerhead sharks, tunas and more; one of the largest jellyfish collections anywhere; a walk-through wave crash tunnel; and the award-winning Splash Zone family galleries with tropical corals and fishes, penguins, and other engaging animals and activities. Visit www.montereybayaquarium.org for an exciting preview of aquarium exhibits, programs and tours.

TENTACLES: THE ASTOUNDING LIVES OF OCTOPUSES, SQUID AND CUTTLEFISHES” SPECIAL EXHIBITION: Journey to a world of undersea magicians, masters of disguise and quick-change artists in “Tentacles: The Astounding Lives of Octopuses, Squid and Cuttlefishes.” “Tentacles” is the largest, most diverse living exhibition ever created to showcase these amazing marine animals. A dozen live exhibits feature such exotic, hypnotic and dramatic species as the giant Pacific octopus, chambered nautilus, Hawaiian bobtail squid, flamboyant cuttlefish, wunderpus octopus and more, possibly including never before seen deep-sea species. (Through Labor Day, 2016). Included with aquarium admission.

WILDLIFE SPOTTING STATION: A new Wildlife Spotting Station staffed by naturalists lets guests use a high-powered telescope and binoculars to witness firsthand the abundant wildlife that’s routinely seen from the aquarium’s Great Tide Pool deck. Visitors will spy otters frolicking and resting in kelp beds, seals resting on nearby rocks, dolphins’ fins ripping through water, whales spouting and birds flying, nesting and diving.

“MYSTERIES OF THE DEEP”, TO OPEN NOVEMBER 22: The remodeled “Mission to the Deep” exhibit highlights the valuable work of the aquarium’s partner institution, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI). Visitors walk inside a 360-degree video projection of the Monterey Canyon that immerses them in a virtual underwater world and sets the stage to learn about three facets of MBARI’s work – deep-sea exploration, technology and research. A scale model of one of MBARI’s remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) looms overhead while visitors operate simulated ROV missions at modules in the center of the room.

ENHANCED AQUARIUM APP & TRIP PLANNING TOOLS: The aquarium’s iPhone app lets visitors create custom postcards and provides alerts for programs visitors won’t want to miss. Available free on the App Store, it offers instant access to nearly 100 stunning images of exhibit animals like sea otters, sharks and jellies that visitors can share on Facebook, Twitter and by e-mail. Visitors can opt to receive text messages to learn about the UFOs, or Unscheduled Feeding Opportunities, that take place daily throughout the aquarium. Make trip planning to Monterey easy by visiting http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/visit and www.seemonterey.org.

“THE JELLIES EXPERIENCE” SPECIAL EXHIBITION: The magical world of jellies – graceful, dancing drifters that pulse and glow, flash colorful lights and often pack a powerful sting is alive in all its psychedelic glory with “The Jellies Experience.” It features 16 species from around the world: from crystalline comb jellies that pulse like living rainbows to improbable flower-hat jellies with magenta and chartreuse highlights on transparent, pin-striped bodies; from elegant Japanese sea nettles to upside-down jellies; from a room that immerses visitors in a living moon jelly swarm, to exhibits of fluorescent jellies and Day-Glo corals. Ongoing. Included with aquarium admission.

“OTTER DAYS”, SEPTEMBER 20 & 21: Learn about Monterey Bay’s most charismatic creatures from experts who care for them at the aquarium and researchers who study them in the wild. Special family activities and programs feature adorable otters. Included with aquarium admission.
