On June 13-15, the Aquarium will partner with the State Department on a two-day, round-the-clock #Fishackathon to help create tools for better management of fisheries in the developing world. Select winners will be awarded $5,000 cash by Cast Software, or a trip to the Philippines. There’s a third prize, too, from the Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program – $1,000 cash and a Monterey vacation getaway – for best tool that improves the flow of seafood information from sea to plate in the U.S.

Hackathons have developed in the tech world as a way to crowdsource solutions to a real-world “problem” presented when they arrive. In this case, teams will spend the weekend designing a solution to a major challenge facing those working to better protect fisheries in the developing world, or one serving the seafood information needs of conscientious chefs and businesses.

We’ll have up to 80 accomplished coders, designers and project managers from the region at the Aquarium around the clock – and we’d like to an extend a special invitation to you, to come and check out this first-ever hackathon event. Teams will be competing with coders at four other sites around the country, all as a prelude to the State Department’s Our Ocean 2014 summit that begins June 16 in Washington, DC.

Participants will be coding and snacking through the wee hours of the night, working toward the common goal of creating “innovative technology that addresses sustainable fishery challenges.”

You’ll have access to the “fishackathon” during one or both evenings at the Aquarium in order to experience what’s going on as the teams hack the night away. We can also send photos and other assets we collect during the event, and coordinate interviews with participants.
